Crossover Moves

The Crossover Dribble

Also known as the ankle breaker, the crossover dribble is a low and quick bounce dribbling that allows the player to switch momentum as quick as possible. This move is used to fake the opponent into creating an opening for the ball handler to drive to the hoops. The action one sees in a crossover dribble is so fantastic, that many spectators consider it as a very exciting highlight in a basketball game.

The crossover dribble is an important move that the all players holding the guard positions should know.
But, it is also a great move for every player to learn because it is very effective in making open space for an offender to attack the defense.

Steps in Making a Crossover Dribble:

If you want to learn crossover dribble, there are several steps on how you can do it;

• The first step is to dribble using your strongest hand as you approach the defender.

• Pause and focus in the direction you want your opponent to go.

• Next, you have to push the ball to the side where you’re dribbling. With that, your opponent may move with you. Once he has done that, you have to dribble the ball in other direction and cut to the net before he catches up.

A Few Tips to Keep in Mind

• Watch your defender's balance. The best time to execute the move is when your opponent's weight shifts.

• Keep in mind that speed and control of the ball is essential for this move.

• Also, use the pause with patience, once your opponent commits, then counter with the crossover.

It would also be very wise to emulate players who perform this move well.  Players to watch would include:

• Jason Williams

• Baron Davis and

• Jason Kidd

Excellent ball control and quick foot work are the essential keys of this crossover move. If you combine these essentials with good rhythm and a deceptive mind, you will master this move and score at will while your opponent falls to the floor in embarrassment.
